Get Involved — We Need Your Help
The Squire Munro Project is a collaboration of volunteers helping to preserve our common heritage.
Are ready to “dig in” and help advance our genealogical research? Don’t worry, there is no actual digging involved; in fact, you won’t even get your hands dirty. There are many ways that you can help without even leaving the comfort of your home.
Share With Relatives
We want to make contact with as many distant relatives as possible so please share this project with your children, siblings, cousins and parents. Use these buttons to share this website with family members through E-mail, Facebook and Google+
Join our Facebook Group
Be sure to join our Squire Munro Descendants Facebook group and invite your family members to join also. This group is for anyone who is descended from Squire or is connected to the family through marriage or adoption.
Contribute Your Family History
If you are a Squire Munro Descendant and have a PDF or Word document outlining the genealogical history of your branch, please consider uploading a copy for us to compare to our data. We are also interested in knowing about any old photographs, letters, wills, deeds or other documents that you have in your collection as copies might help our research efforts.
One of the easiest ways everyone can help is to volunteer to review data for your immediate branch. When requested, we will send you a PDF report containing the names, dates and locations of members of your immediate family, starting with your grandparents or great-grandparents. You can read through it and let us know if you notice any mistakes or can fill in any missing information. This helps us keep accurate information about the current generations, for whom there are not yet records available. To get started, just send us an email and request a report of what information we have for your branch.
Note: In the future we will be looking for people with an interest in genealogy to adopt a branch and become responsible for its upkeep over time. Watch for this announcement in the future and let us know if you have an interest.
Volunteer as a Transcriber
A large part of our project involves locating and transcribing documents including obituaries, newspaper articles, letters, deeds and biographies. This work is all performed by project managers or with the help of volunteers like you. It’s easy to get started; all you need is a free dropbox account and a computer with Microsoft Word. Each document doesn’t take much time at all. A typical newspaper article might take about 10-20 minutes to complete. You can request one or more documents as you have time time and work at your own pace.
Dropbox provides a safe way to share a folder between our two computers. When you request a file to transcribe, we drop it in a folder and it appears in a corresponding folder on your computer. When you are finished with a file, we can download it and integrated it into our growing archives.
After you volunteer, just follow these steps:
- Learn more about dropbox here.
- Sign up for a free dropbox account.
- Download and install drop box on your computer to create a folder structure into which our shared folder will go.
- You will receive an email from us with a link to your dropbox folder. Once you accept our “share” your “SMP” folder should appear on your computer inside your Dropbox folder.
- Read these instructions about our transcribing process.
- When you are ready to start let us know and we will send you one document to transcribe to get started. After that is complete and reviewed, you can request additional work as you have time.
Volunteer as a Local Researcher
Our project is world wide. We are often looking for someone to visit a library or regional historic site. Occasionally we need people in certain geographical regions to visit a library, historical society or graveyard to find a document or take a photograph. If you are willing to help with this when time allows, send us an email. We will put you on a list and if a need arises in your area we will forward it on to you.
Volunteer as a Social Media Contact Person
As part of our effort to find distant family who are still living, we search for and contact people on Facebook. However, to avoid being labeled as a spammer for contacting people that we don’t necessarily know (and because of our busy schedules), we have to greatly slow down the pace of contact to a couple of people per week. So we are looking for people who can volunteer to send out a couple of Facebook messages a week to people we specify, sending a message and files that we provide.
